Oral Maxillofacial Surgery

An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is a specific surgical specialty.  Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons may be board-certified through the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery or may be a dentist graduated from an accredited dental school and completed a residency program approved by the American Dental Association Commission in Dental Accreditation. These specialists treat and reconstruct areas of the face especially mouth and jaw (TMJ –temporomandibular joint problems) , head, or neck typically after an injury or as adjunctive treatment for other surgeries such as excision of tumors.. They also perform cosmetic surgery and treat birth defects (such as cleft lip and palate) or growth disturbances of the jaw.
