Orthopedic Surgery - Spine

Orthopedic Surgeons may develop a special interest in procedures involving the treatment of spine-related orthopedic conditions. Some of the common conditions treated by spine surgeons are:

  • Herniated/slipped disc - this condition is characterized by pain or numbness in the back or in the legs due to impingement of the spinal cord. This condition is treated surgically by decompressing the spinal cord and possible discectomy or spinal fusion.
  • Spinal fracture - trauma to the back can lead to fracture of the vertebra. If not addressed immediately, this can lead to spinal cord injury which can lead to paralysis. Vertebral fracture is treated surgically by supporting the vertebra with metal plates or other implants.
  • Scoliosis - scoliosis is an S-shaped deformity of the spinal column that leads to a limited space for the organs in the thoracic cavity. This deformity can be straightened surgically by spine surgeons.
